Greetings Woodlands Academy Families and Friends, The significance of a ring - it is widely known that the gift of a ring symbolizes love, commitment and a promise. Of course, I am speaking of an engagement ring or a wedding band. However, when I recently talked to the Juniors about getting their class ring, I was speaking to these same points. Receiving the Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart class ring is very special and more than a rite of passage. The Woodlands ring carries the symbol of the Society of the Sacred Heart (the pierced heart of Mary and the Sacred Heart of Jesus, along with "Woodlands" encircled by a laurel wreath - see below). When the Juniors received their ring this afternoon, they placed it on their finger with the seal facing them. This practice symbolizes a recognition that they are still in the process of becoming women of the Sacred Heart. When the seniors graduate in June, they will be invited to turn their ring so the seal faces outward. This is a conscious statement and signs to all that they are ready to live their life in a manner that brings forth what they learned through the Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart Education into the world. Wearing a Woodlands ring when a young woman goes off to college or university brings a little bit of "home" with her. Aanya Sahu '24 addressed her class and shared that as her peers glance at these rings - they will be reminded of their relationships formed, the opportunities taken, the times they supported each other, and "All the times we were being supported as we stepped out of our comfort zone." One of the most amazing things about wearing a Sacred Heart ring is that alumnae from other Network schools will recognize the seal on the ring and ask, "What school did you go to?" I realize this sounds a little hard to believe, but it happens each fall- alumnae connect randomly because they see that ring and know they have found a friend, someone with whom they have a common bond. I shared with the Juniors that I was once on the Metro in Paris when a woman approached me and asked me in French, "Étiez-vous une ancienne du Sacred Coeur?" It took me a minute to think that she was not asking me if I was old (ancienne) but if I was a Sacred Heart alumna. She saw my ring! And then she showed me the one she wore on her pinkie finger - what a delight it was to have this encounter far from home. Today we celebrated the Class of 2024 as they begin taking on Woodlands' leadership roles. It was a day for them to grow further as a class and celebrate how far they have come on their Sacred Heart journey. As WACOR President, Clara Bartusiak '23, shared, "This is a perfect time to reflect, remember, and celebrate all that you have accomplished, all that you have learned, all the ways in which you have grown- both as individuals and as a class." | Woodlands Academy Presents High School Musical Please join us today and Saturday, March 4 at 6:00 pm at the Susan Saint James Performing Arts Center to see our musical. This romantic comedy-drama follows two main characters who break out of their usual social roles as athletes or "brainiacs" to take the risk of auditioning for the school's musical—a decision that affects the entire school! Concessions will be available at the performance for purchase from the Service Club. All proceeds will support Flint Creek Wildlife Rehabilitation. Tickets will be available at the door for $15. Welcoming Exchange Guests Next week Woodlands will welcome 55 sophomores from the Academy of the Sacred Heart, the Rosary, New Orleans, for a two-night stay. The Gloria Dei Center will be the site of their sophomore retreat run by staff members from the Rosary. The group will depart on Thursday to spend a few days in Chicago. Next Friday, our guests from Sacre Coeur Wien will arrive, and we will enjoy two weeks with the students from Austria. |

Two Weekends in April, Two Opportunities to Walk/Run our Beautiful Campus! On Sunday, April 16, Student Organizers, led by Avery Drehkoff '25, are hosting a Walk for Water. Participants will walk our beautiful campus to raise money for clean drinking water around the world. On Saturday, April 22, our Alumnae Association is hosting a Fun Run/Walk in celebration of Earth Day. Take advantage of spring weather and gather with alumnae and friends of the school to get some exercise. More information and registration is available here. |

Spring Break Prearranged Absence Reminder & Safety Protocols If your travels include your daughter missing any days before or after our scheduled break, a parent/guardian must inform the front desk - (847) 234-4300/ receptionist@woodlandsacademy.org of your travel plans prior to her absence. If an email/phone call/or absence notification is not received prior to the absence date, it will be marked as unexcused. Absences solely reported to a teacher by the student are unacceptable. Students that are not feeling well should be kept home until their symptoms have subsided. There has been an uptick in students being unable to attend classes because of feeling ill. Let's keep our Woodlands community healthy by trying to keep the germs at bay. |
