Remembering 9/11

Tomorrow, our nation marks the 25th anniversary of the events of September 11, 2001. For our students, this day is not a personal memory, but a point in history. As a Sacred Heart school community, we believe it is our profound responsibility to help our students understand this history in a way that builds empathy, gratitude, civic responsibility, and a deep appreciation for human resilience.

To that end, today we held an assembly and prayer service that allowed the students to hear about the events of that morning as recounted in the form of a timeline.  Members of the adult community then shared their personal histories (ranging from the memories of a then third grader to that of an adult working in Washington, DC) to help the students grow in their understanding of how the events impacted them as they experienced the day.

If as a nation we are called to remember, both the lives lost and the heroic efforts of the fire fighters, paramedics, police, military personnel and everyday citizens who responded to the call for help and acted, then we as adults must share their stories and our own.  Do not be surprised if your daughter asks where you were on 9/11.  In order for future generations to remember, these stories must be told.

United in Mission,
